Is your skin dry, flaking, or irritated? You might benefit from a ceramide serum!

Ceramides are an often forgotten ingredient. Not as sexy as hyaluronic acid and not as new and exciting as probiotic serums and moisturizers. But they can be a massive game-changer if you’ve struggled with a weak moisture barrier.

So what are ceramides?

Ceramides occur naturally in your skin, specifically in the lipid of the lamellar sheets. This lipid is made of three things: free fatty acids, cholesterol, and ceramides.

Okay, so what does this mean?

Ceramides act like the mortar between the “bricks” of skin. Without this, your skin barrier is weak and won’t retain moisture. And unfortunately, a weak skin barrier also means that germs and pollution are more likely to get into your skin. In addition, we all produce fewer ceramides as we age. Due to this, skin is more likely to look dull and dry the older we get.

Without ceramides, we aren’t able to seal in moisture very well. So that hyaluronic acid you’re using? It might not be doing very much if you don’t apply a ceramide afterwards.

You can see why ceramides are so important!

Ceramides can be applied topically, which will help increase the ceramides within your skin’s lipids. You can find them in all types of products, from sheet masks to moisturizes and serums.

Right now, we’re loving the Ceramide Barrier Cream from Dew Lab. It’s a no-nonsense serum built to lock in moisture without fluffy ingredients—no scents- and plant-based.

If serums aren’t your thing, there are plenty of options for you out there. They might not be a hot topic, but ceramides might just be your low-key skincare superhero.
